While many people enjoy the thought of working for themselves, the truth is that entrepreneurship is a lot of hard work that demands certain qualities from people. A great idea is a good start, but you need much more than that to get the company off the ground and help it grow. In the end, anyone can start a business. The companies that truly thrive are those with leaders who manifest certain characteristics.

Importantly, these characteristics are not necessarily inborn but can be developed over time with some diligence and mindfulness. Read on to learn about six key characteristics successful entrepreneurs have in common.

1. Resourcefulness

Often, entrepreneurs build their businesses from the ground up using very few resources. You need to understand how to make the most out of what you have since your assets will likely be quite limited, especially in the beginning. If you are creative with the tools at your disposal, you can convince more investors to back you.

Resourcefulness can include having an extensive network that you can tap into when you need assistance. Look for opportunities to meet new people and let them know about your aspirations, as well as what you have done to work toward them already. Even if they do not invest, they may have ideas about how you can achieve something with relatively little.

2. Perseverance

As an entrepreneur, you will face hurdle after hurdle. Over time, these hurdles can become frustrating and even make you want to quit. Perseverance means always being able to see the goals ahead and continuing to work toward them even when they seem unachievable. Learn to hear the word “no” and not take it personally. Even seasoned entrepreneurs still hear “no” frequently. The key to success is never giving up and always looking for a new path forward. You will need to hone your coping techniques to be able to deal with any obstacles. While you may need a bit of time to recover from disappointment, getting back to work quickly means opening yourself up to new opportunities sooner.

3. Open-mindedness

You may not associate entrepreneurship with open-mindedness, but it is one of the key characteristics necessary for success. As you develop your business, you should have a clear plan about how to move forward. However, you should also be open to new ideas and changes in that plan. If the path you are on is not leading where you intended, you need to recognize that as soon as possible and begin making new plans. Always take the time to evaluate where you are, where you have been, and where you want to go.

Entrepreneurship involves frequent revision, and open-mindedness will allow you to see that. Be open to criticism and take feedback seriously even if it is not exactly what you want to hear. Even if the path you are on is not leading to failure, you may be able to get to where you want to be quicker if you listen to the people around you.

4. Persuasiveness

Communication is an essential skill for an entrepreneur. You need to be able to communicate ideas and expectations efficiently as you seek out staff and recruit investors. Moreover, you need to be persuasive when you do so. Entrepreneurs often have a certain charm to them that gets people to like them. In turn, they have an easier time recruiting top employees and convincing people to back their idea.

As an entrepreneur, you need to develop your communication skills in many ways, but be sure you pay special attention to your persuasiveness and your ability to get people to see your vision. This skill will also serve you very well later down the line as you begin to attract customers to your business.

5. Decisiveness

Frequently, entrepreneurs are faced with big decisions that have serious consequences no matter the final call. Making these decisions can be very difficult for some. However, waffling back and forth does not instill confidence in investors, employees, or customers. Instead of taking a long time to decide or avoiding the action altogether, you need to figure out how to weigh options quickly and take a stand.

Importantly, it is not a terrible thing if the decision you make turns out to be wrong. Don’t be embarrassed; own up to the mistake and use it as a learning opportunity moving forward. Doing this sets a great example of honesty while communicating that no one is perfect.

6. Innovation

One of the key attributes of any successful entrepreneur is innovation. In today’s world, innovation has become a buzzword. However, innovation does not apply only to technological advances. As you begin to envision your company, think about how it can stand out from competitors and bring something new to the market. That is the definition of innovation.

If you want to start a company, chances are you have already identified a problem and feel motivated to solve it. That solution is innovation. As an entrepreneur, it is important never to become complacent when it comes to innovation. Always ask yourself how you can do things differently to provide a better product or service. Doing this will keep your business thriving.
